Banco Nacional de Angola’s State-of-the-Art Cash Center Designed by G+D Goes into Operation
Luanda/Munich, 13 March 2025 – Angola has officially inaugurated its new, high-technology cash center “Casa do Kwanza” in the capital Luanda. Giesecke+Devrient (G+D) designed, supplied and managed the implementation of the central infrastructure project for the southwestern African country’s nationwide cash supply. In the cash center, Banco Nacional de Angola will be able to process up to four million banknotes of the national currency, the Kwanza, which will be available daily for reissuance into the cash cycle.
At the opening ceremony on February 27, Manuel Tiago Dias, Governor of the National Bank of Angola, emphasized the importance of the project for the further economic development of the country. With the newly built cash center in Luanda and nine regional branches, Angola has continuously been modernizing its entire national cash infrastructure over the past decade.
G+D planned this greenfield project – from the conception of the building and the IT and security requirements to the cash handling processes – taking the leading role in the overall implementation and integration with all partners involved. This included equipping the building with highly automated systems for the efficient and secure processing of banknotes, state-of-the-art IT and security infrastructure, and a multi-level high-security vault to store banknotes and coins of the national currency, as well as gold, diamonds and works of art.
Once officially opened, G+D will continue to support Banco Nacional de Angola with its local service teams deployed on-site. Together with the central bank’s operators and engineers, G+D will maintain the hardware and software while periodically training new local employees to operate the cash center.
„It is a source of joy and pride to inaugurate the Casa do Kwanza in the year that our country celebrates 50 years since achieving National Independence,“ said President João Lourenço during his intervention to the press. „This infrastructure was much needed, as its role used to be previously carried out under very difficult conditions in the Headquarters Building of the Banco Nacional de Angola. This was a challenge both in terms of accommodating human capital and, more importantly, from a security perspective, as currency is one of the symbols of national sovereignty. Therefore, protecting our currency is vital and necessary.“
„Angola’s population and economy continue to grow, making the need for cash ever more important. Casa do Kwanza is an important project to support the country’s economic development. We are honored and proud to have been the key integrator and supplier of this world class infrastructure project. Together with our esteemed and trusted partner, National Bank of Angola, G+D has been able to demonstrate its expertise and technological competence,“ emphasizes Wolfgang Kneilmann, Member of the G+D Currency Technology Management Board, at the inauguration ceremony in Luanda. „This is a further vote of confidence in our 15-year lasting partnership.“
