Juniper Research presents G+D, Bundesdruckerei and partners with Gold Award for quantum-safe ID card

Munich/Berlin, October 8, 2026 – Giesecke+Devrient (G+D) and Bundesdruckerei GmbH, together with the German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) and Infineon Technologies AG, have received the Juniper Research Identity & Security Award 2026 in the “Post Quantum Cryptography Excellence – Gold Winner” category. The award recognizes the “Demonstrator for a quantum-safe identity card” – one of the world’s first functional implementations of a national identity card combining conventional cryptography with post-quantum cryptography.

Quantum-resistant cryptography needs to work not only in theory, but also under the tight technical constraints of identity documents. The award underlines the relevance of the technology: The demonstrator shows that highly secure, quantum-resistant cryptography can also be implemented in practice on the resource-constrained chips used in identity documents. This creates an important foundation for protecting digital identities against future quantum attacks over the long term.

The feasibility study takes a hybrid approach, combining conventional cryptography with post-quantum cryptography in line with current recommendations for quantum-safe algorithms. A particular challenge was the secure and efficient implementation of the computationally intensive PQC algorithms, which G+D successfully achieved. The Infineon chips used in the project also feature a new design that facilitates fast, side-channel-resistant implementation of the PQC algorithms.

“As a security company of the German federal government, Bundesdruckerei has been working on post-quantum cryptography and quantum computing for many years. In 2022, together with our partners, we developed the world’s first demonstrator for an electronic passport that also meets the high security requirements of the quantum computing era. We are very pleased to now receive this award for our project with G+D and our other partners to develop a quantum-safe identity card,” says Thomas Löer, Head of German ID-Systems at Bundesdruckerei GmbH.

“Post-quantum cryptography will become a key building block for the security of digital identities. With the demonstrator, we show that quantum-safe solutions can be implemented under the specific requirements of identity document chips. Having this technological achievement recognized with a Juniper Award is a great honor for us and, at the same time, confirms our commitment to shaping security for the quantum era at an early stage,” says Gabriel von Mitschke-Collande, Group CDO at G+D.

With this award, Juniper Research once again recognizes G+D’s innovations in security-critical fields that will shape the future. G+D had already received several Juniper Awards in 2025 and in previous years.
