Amazon EC2 ist ein Webdienst, der hochverfügbare, sichere, größenveränderliche On-demand-Computing-Kapazität in der Cloud bietet. EC2 ist so konzipiert, dass es Entwicklern, kommerziellen ISVs (Independent Software Vendor) und IT-Organisationen weltweit das Computing im großen Maßstab erleichtert. Über die AWS-Management-Konsole können Anwender EC2-Instanzen mit vorkonfiguriertem Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 und 6 anschaffen und bereitstellen. Dabei bezahlt der Kunde nur die Zeit, die er auch genutzt hat.

Diese Ankündigung ist das Ergebnis einer weitreichenden Zusammenarbeit zwischen Red Hat und AWS, um vorhandene Kundenbedürfnisse befriedigen zu können.“

Bestandskunden von Red Hat Enterprise Linux können RHEL 5 und 6 im Rahmen der Red-Hat-Cloud-Access-Fähigkeit der Red-Hat-Verträge bereits heute in allen Amazon-EC2-Regionen einsetzen. Red Hat wird in den kommenden Monaten gemeinsam mit Amazon daran arbeiten, um darüber hinaus auch On-demand-Instanzen und Support-Optionen zu schaffen. Außerdem werden vorhandene Beta-Nutzer der On-demand-Dienste auf die freigegebenen On-demand-Instanzen migriert.
