In 2020, ownCloud grows by more than 50 percent

Nuremberg, Germany, 3 February 2021 – ownCloud, an open source file collaboration platform specialist, has seen bookings grow by more than 50 precent in 2020. The SaaS solution ownCloud.online even increased by over 200 percent in the same period.

„2020 turned out to be the year with the strongest growth for ownCloud in its ten-year history. After a slow start due to Covid-19 lockdowns, orders increased markedly in the second half of 2020. As leading vendor of open source content collaboration platforms, ownCloud is in a strong position to benefit from the global trend towards remote work. After all, the major challenge that most IT managers are facing is to swiftly come up with secure and user-friendly infrastructure to enable efficient and productive work from home,“ comments Tobias Gerlinger, CEO at ownCloud, on the strong business development.

Only during their scramble into remote work, did numerous companies discover that their existing file-level collaboration solutions did not meet their requirements. Many tried to cope by setting up new VPN connections. Now that it has become clear that remote work is here to stay, companies move to implement sustainable collaboration solutions. Public cloud solutions often do not fit the bill, at least on their own, because they lack key characteristics especially for handling sensitive data. The European Court of Justice’s decision to rule the EU-US Privacy Shield invalid is also fueling demand for privacy-compliant private cloud solutions such as ownCloud.

ownCloud responded to the increase in demand by expanding its staff to 65, strengthening software development, quality assurance and customer service in particular.

Success through high security and productivity

As an enterprise-oriented open source file collaboration platform, ownCloud offers top-grade security and functionality for comprehensive IT modernization. This allows companies to ensure that file access is always auditable and accountable, that critical data never leaves their own servers, and that personal information retention periods can be enforced to comply with legal requirements, to name just a few selected aspects.

What’s next?

ownCloud recently released version 1.1.0, the second tech preview for its new ownCloud Infinite Scale platform. It is being developed in collaboration with CERN and other research institutions. ownCloud Infinite Scale builds on ten years of experience in developing and implementing the leading open source content collaboration platform. It relies on a microservices architecture and the Go programming language. The result is a highly scalable high-performance and cloud-native file platform that runs by simply executing a binary in any cloud environment. „Our customers increasingly want to utilize ownCloud as a service that is easily scalable, whether as a managed service on-premises or hosted in the cloud. This is what ownCloud Infinite Scale is optimized for. It represents a quantum leap in terms of performance while at the same time significantly reducing operational overhead. The keen interest of the developer community shows that we are on the right track. We’re very excited that ownCloud Infinite Scale recently made it to the top 3 most trending projects on GitHub,“ says Tobias Gerlinger.
