Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization ist die einzige unternehmensweit einsetzbare Open-Source-Virtualisierungsplattform. Bereits die Version 3.0, die im Januar 2012 auf den Markt kam, überzeugte durch eine hohe Performance und Skalierbarkeit sowie niedrige Kosten. Der Kernel-based Virtual Machine (KVM) Hypervisor von Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization 3.1 erreichte in 19 von 27 veröffentlichten SPECvirt_sc2010-Performancemessungen (www.spec.org) den ersten Platz, darunter in den Benchmarks für Zwei- und Vier-Sockel-Systeme sowie in dem einzigen veröffentlichten Test eines Acht-Sockel-Systems. Aufgrund von 50 bis 70 Prozent niedrigerer Kosten im Vergleich zu alternativen Lösungen bietet die Version 3.1 zudem ein sehr gutes Preis-Leistungs-Verhältnis.

Wichtige neue Features der Version 3.1

Zu den wichtigsten neuen Funktionen zählt die Skalierbarkeit der virtuellen Maschinen: Die Version 3.1 unterstützt bis zu 160 virtuelle CPUs und 2 TB RAM pro virtueller Maschine. Zudem läuft der KVM-Hypervisor auf den neuesten x86-Prozessoren. Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization 3.1 nutzt die gleiche KVM-Hypervisor-Technologie wie Red Hat Enterprise Linux sowie das gleiche Application Binary Interface (ABI). Unternehmen können damit beide Plattformen sehr flexibel und optimal aufeinander abgestimmt kombinieren.

Darüber hinaus enthält Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization 3.1 eine überarbeitete Benutzeroberfläche, ein webbasiertes Administrations-Portal, ein aktualisiertes Reporting Dashboard sowie neue und erweiterte Netzwerk- und Speicherfunktionen. Ein Technology Preview für die Storage Live Migration ermöglicht die Migration von VM-Dateien (Virtual Machine Disk Files) auf eine andere Storage Domain, ohne dass die virtuelle Maschine heruntergefahren werden muss. Das Power-User-Portal bietet jetzt eine Resource-Quota-Funktion und ermöglicht berechtigten Benutzern, beispielsweise in Private-Cloud-Einsatzszenarien, selbstständig Ressourcen für Test- oder Entwicklungsumgebungen zu reservieren. Neu hinzugekommen sind auch Funktionen im Bereich der Virtual-Desktop-Infrastruktur (VDI), etwa eine neue Virtual Desktop Autostart Policy sowie verbesserte Funktionen für den Einsatz in WANs und ein überarbeiteter Virtual Desktop Client. Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization 3.1 ist in Englisch, Französisch, Japanisch, Spanisch und vereinfachtem Chinesisch verfügbar.

Einbindung von Red Hat Storage

Eine wichtige Neuerung ist die Einbindung von Red Hat Storage, der skalierbaren Open-Source-basierten Softwarelösung für das Management unterschiedlicher Datenformate – Blöcke, Dateien, Objekte sowie strukturierte und unstrukturierte Daten. Red Hat Storage 2.0, eine offene, umfassende Scale-Out-Software, ist seit Juni 2012 verfügbar und basiert auf der GlusterFS-Technologie, die Red Hat im Oktober 2011 kaufte.

In der Version 3.0 ermöglichte Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization via iSCSI, Fibre-Channel NFS oder lokal einen Zugriff auf Virtual Images/Storage. Diese Optionen wurden mit der Version 3.1 noch einmal ausgebaut. Möglich ist jetzt der Zugriff auf einen sicheren, gemeinsam genutzten Speicherpool, den Red Hat Storage verwaltet. Damit entsteht ein wichtiger Baustein für offene hybride Clouds. Als Folge der zusätzlichen Speicherfunktionen profitieren Unternehmen durch geringere Betriebskosten, eine verbesserte Portabilität, die freie Wahl bei der Infrastruktur, eine höhere Flexibilität, Skalierbarkeit und Verfügbarkeit sowie der Leistungsfähigkeit einer Community-gesteuerten Innovation und den Beiträgen der oVirt- und Gluster-Projekte. Die Kombination dieser Plattformen ist der erste Schritt bei der Verwirklichung von Red Hats Vision einer Zusammenführung von Red Hat Storage und Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization, die sowohl Rechen- als auch Speicherkapazitäten bietet.
