Das Apache-Projekt Deltacloud ist eine Open-Source-Implementierung einer RESTful Web Service API, die von den allgemeinen proprietären IaaS-Cloud-Management-APIs abstrahiert. Das Projekt wurde im September 2009 von Red Hat gestartet und zu Beginn dieses Jahres zum Apache Incubator verschoben. Damit wurde seine Bedeutung für das Cloud-Computing-Ökosystem hervorgehoben. Bei der Apache Software Foundation durchläuft das Projekt einen Reifungsprozess und kann sich innerhalb einer Community, die auf die bekannten Werte von Apache wie Offenheit und Meritokratie setzt, entwickeln. Die Innovation im Deltacloud-Projekt war ein wichtiger Teil der Entwicklung der Cloud Foundations von Red Hat, die im Juni 2010 angekündigt wurde.

Das Deltacloud-Projekt bietet DMTF heute eine der wenigen Open-Cloud-APIs für die Entwicklung. Damit stellt es die Prinzipien von Open Source, wie Innovation durch die Anwender, den Nutzern aktueller Cloud-Computing-APIs bereit.
